2025 CALCUTTA
The easiest way to enter the Owner’s Ring on Cup Day! Full terms and conditions are available by request at the pub.
STAGE 1: THE DRAW
The first stage is just like any other raffle. You buy tickets and we randomly select winners. All the prizes for the Draw will ultimately be cash.
On 2nd November, we will draw 24 winners who will each be assigned a horse racing in the Melbourne Cup. The rights to each of these horses will be auctioned off on the same night.
Whoever wins a horse in the Draw will receive half of the amount their horse fetches at the auction. The exact amount won’t be known until the auction stage is complete – but for our Calcutta, if you win a horse that fails to attract a bid of $100 or more at the auction, you will receive a $75 consolation prize.
In other words, if you are one of the 24 winners in the Draw, you will win at least $75 in cash – and it could be more, possibly quite a bit more if the horse you win is hotly contested at the auction.
We will be selling tickets into the Draw from 7th October right up until when the Draw takes place at the Draw & Auction on 2 November.
You don’t need to be present at the draw to win one of the prizes. The results will be posted in the pub within 24 hours.
All the proceeds from the Draw will go into the Prize Pool for the final stage.
STAGE 2: THE AUCTION
Following the Draw, each horse will be auctioned to the attendees at the Calcutta Draw & Auction on 2 November.
Only those who are physically present at the Calcutta Auction will have an opportunity to bid. You can bid as an individual, or you might choose to pool resources with others at your table and bid as a syndicate. It’s entirely up to you.
After the hammer falls on each runner, the highest bidder becomes the owner of that horse for the final Sweep stage of the Calcutta.
Successful bidders must pay for their horses on the night. Cash and EFTPOS facilities will be available.
Half of the final sale price for each horse will go to the person who won that horse in the Draw and the other half goes into the ever-growing Prize Pool to be paid out in the final stage – the Sweep.
STAGE 3: THE SWEEP
From here on, the Calcutta Sweep is pretty much like any typical office sweep – except the potential prizes are much bigger.
By this stage, all the horses running in the cup will have been assigned an owner (which could be an individual or a syndicate).
The outcome of the race (the 2024 Melbourne Cup) determines who wins and how much they receive.
The Final Prize Pool in our Calcutta consists of all the ticket sales from stage 1 plus half of the proceeds from the auction in stage 2 less any amounts that may have
been deducted for consolation prizes or refunds for scratchings.
When the official results of the 2024 Melbourne Cup are known, the Final Prize Pool will be divided as follows:
• 60% goes to the owner of the winning horse;
• 20% goes to the owner of the second placegetter;
• 10% goes to the owner of the third placegetter; and
• 10% goes to the owner of the last horse to officially finish the race
Final results will be posted in the pub within 24 hours of the Race taking place.
If you cannot make it to the Draw & Auction, but would still like to be involved, entries in the Draw for 24 cash prizes of $75 or greater will be available to purchase from our staff for just $5 each from Monday 7th October.
